Georgia Bio Names Gwinnett School of Math, Science, & Technology Senior, Georgia BioGENEius Finalist

Atlanta, GA (April 4, 2016) – Georgia Bio and the Georgia BioEd Institute today named Gwinnett School of Math, Science, & Technology Senior Simran Modi of Lawrenceville, GA as the winner of the 2016 Georgia BioGENEius Challenge, the premier competition for high school students that recognizes outstanding research and innovation in the biotechnology field. As Georgia’s BioGENEius finalist, Ms. Modi will attend the 2016 BIO International Convention in San Francisco, the industry’s trade conference, where she will engage with leading companies, scientists and innovators currently transforming the scientific landscape in order to gain invaluable insights into an industry making significant contributions to the world.
While in San Francisco, Ms. Modi will compete against students from the U.S., Canada and Germany in the International BioGENEius Challenge. The projects presented will represent a range of biotechnology topics such as healthcare, agriculture, and the environment.
“The Challenge highlights the breakthroughs made when we invest and encourage our younger generations to pursue their ideas. These students are facing the world’s greatest problems head on and providing solutions to heal, feed, and fuel people and the environment,” said Georgia Bio President and CEO Russell Allen. “Georgia Bio is excited to cheer Simran on in San Francisco at the 2016 BIO International Convention as we already know that her research has great potential to help society as well as inspire others to pursue research projects.”

Ms. Modi’s project was selected because her research focuses on Novel Machine Learning Algorithms for Early Diagnosis of Melanoma. This project aims to create a statistical and numerical method to diagnose skin cancer. The goal is to implement this software in an app and provide it to the public as well as to dermatologists.
Georgia Bio would also like to congratulate the runner-up, Christine Liu of The Westminster Schools for her outstanding project entitled, Application of a Machine Learning Logistic Regression Algorithm in a Classification Model to Predict Epileptic Seizures. Ms. Liu and all of the competitors presented engaging and innovative projects.
Judging the 2016 Georgia BioGENEius were Jamie L. Graham, Partner, Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton; Stephen MacDonald, Patent Agent, Biotechnology & Pharmaceutical Intellectual Property Practice Group, King & Spalding; and Stefan Schulze, Associate Director at UGA’s Innovation Gateway.

Winners will be announced during the Tuesday, June 7th keynote at the 2016 BIO International Convention. The winners will receive a $7,500 cash prize.
