WIB-Atlanta Presents CDC Museum Tour & Reception, “Ebola: People, Public Health and Political Will”

Date: May 24, 2018
Location: Atlanta, GA
WebsiteClick here to learn more.

Ever wonder how CDC scientists merge old-fashioned detective work with cutting-edge science to crack the cases of mystery diseases? Get the Story! Join the Atlanta Chapter of Women in Bio and event partners, Georgia Bio, the Georgia IP Alliance, and the Georgia Global Health Alliance for a tour of the CDC Museum followed by a networking reception.

The CDC Museum tour features the exhibit, Ebola: People + Public Health + Political Will which is an investigation of the historic 2014-16 Ebola Fever Virus epidemic in West Africa, the United States, and around the world. As the crisis unfolded in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone in 2014, it evolved into both a health and humanitarian crisis. When it became clear that Ebola could potentially spread exponentially, threatening global health security, there was a coordinated, massive response. This exhibition includes testimonials from deployers, photographs by leading photojournalists and deployed staff, along with documentaries and a “lessons learned” piece on how the Ebola epidemic helped inform CDC and its partners on a structured rapid response to diseases before they become global public health emergencies. Additionally, this unique museum features award-winning permanent and changing exhibitions that focus on a variety of public health topics, as well as the history of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The museum curator will provide a brief introduction to the exhibit and attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy the exhibit at their own pace. Following the self-guided tour, we will enjoy a catered reception to facilitate networking with Ebola deployers and multiple Atlanta-based STEM community partners. Throughout the event, attendees will have the opportunity to hear testimonials from deployers who helped build lab capacity in Sierra Leone and evaluated and assisted in US hospital readiness planning during the Ebola epidemic. Don’t miss this chance to learn from and mingle with CDC experts and Atlanta community leaders.

Drug Development Boot Camp November 14 -15, 2018 - PHARMA / BIOTECH/ ACADEMIA

Date: November 14-15, 2018

Location: The Harvard Club | Boston, MA
WebsiteClick here to learn more.

The Drug Development Boot Camp® provides intensive training in drug development. It is held with Harvard University OTD in Boston each year. This November the ninth Boot Camp will be held. Georgia BIO companies will be given 50 USD off the advertised price. Please insert GEORGIA BIO 82267 at the end of your surname when registering.  You will be refunded the 50 USD back to your credit card after you have paid.

The pharmaceutical industry has its fair share of Ph.D.s, and MDs, and yet qualifications do not translate into understanding of the drug development process. In fact, even Nobel Laureate scientists can find the drug development process bewildering.

As drug development costs increase, the process of drug development is becoming more and more complex. Those involved with the process of developing new therapeutics (drugs, devices, combination products and diagnostics) must understand the process and be able to navigate it with great skill. These skills are difficult to acquire. At the same time that the process is becoming more complex, researchers and developers are becoming more specialized. The challenge is there is a need to gain a thorough understanding of other areas of research and development in order to be effective in their own areas.

The Drug Development Boot Camp® was founded by Dr. Lorna Speid. The 2018 Boot Camp will be the ninth Drug Development Boot Camp®. The Boot Camp is a very intensive training program designed for those that have relevant experience in the research and development of New Chemical and New Biological Entities. This is a very challenging program not only because of the content, but also because of the amount that must be accomplished in two full days. Participants that complete the Boot Camp can be proud of their accomplishment and the Certificate of Completion that they have earned.
